500+ LGBT Nursing Scholarships [2020]

LGBT nurses – where are you at? I have compiled a long list of LGBT nursing scholarships up for grabs for 2017-2018. Are you leaving nursing school money on the table?

Previously I had published an article about 2018 black nurses’ scholarships available and up for grabs. Hundreds of nurses out there have already found the article very helpful and are sharing it with friends.

This is a long post as there are literally several hundreds of LGBT scholarships out there. While some scholarships are more specific than others, it is better to take a close look to each one of those that applies to you

Some LGBT scholarships are State or City specific. Some others are nationwide and every qualifying student should take advantage of them. For the purpose of this article, I have listed them by national LGBT scholarships first, then state specific.

Some are even college specific or city specific.

Are you ready?

Nationwide LGBT Scholarships

  1. Gamma Mu LGBT scholarships: $1,000 – $2500 Award
    must be a member of LGBT community under 35 years old. The scholarships fund is very generous benefitting dozens of students countrywide. See details on their website
  2. Emory University GALA Leadership Award: $2500 Award per recipient.
    Emory University is one of the most highly regarded medical universities in the United States. This lucrative scholarship is not restricted and can be applied to the nursing program. More details on Emory website.
  3. AT&T League Foundation LGBT scholarships: $1500 to $2500
    Must be US citizen or a permanent resident and maintain a GPA above 3.0. You will realize that there are more than one scholarships listed on the league website. Make sure to take advantage of all you can. Here is the League Foundation LGBT Scholarship Website
  4. Stonewall Community Foundation LGBT Scholarships: $1000 Award
    The scholarship assists undergraduate LGBT students with no academic major restrictions. Here are the details on Stonewall website
  5. PGLAG Scholarships: Dollar amount varies.
    PFLAG literally has hundreds of scholarships all over the United States. Their scholarships are locally based and offered by your State or City PFLAG chapter. Please see PFLAG LGBT website and join your local PFLAG chapter. You’ll be glad you did
  6. Chely Wright “Like Me” Scholarship: Award amount $1250

This scholarship is specifically for high school students affected by teen LGBT bullying. Applicants must be attending to one of the following universities

  • Louisiana State University Louisiana
  • Missouri State University Missouri
  • West Virginia University West Virginia
  • Florida International University Florida
  • Middlesex Community College Massachusetts
  • University of Chicago Illinois
  • Murray State College Oklahoma
  • Santa Clara University California
  • Rowan College of Burlington County New Jersey
  • Maryland Institute of Art Maryland
  • The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
  • Kennesaw State University Georgia
  • Brown University Rhode Island
  1. Deloris Carter Hampton Scholarship: Award $500 – $10000
    This scholarship is awarded to African American LGBT students. Please see details on the Pride foundation website. Scholars applying for this scholarship should also take a look at African American Nursing Scholarships.
  2. Equity Foundation LGBT Scholarships: Award Varies
    There are several dozens of LGBT scholarships applicable for nursing school listed on Equity Foundation website. It is advisable you go through them and find out which ones apply for your situation. Example, there are some specific to Latino LGBT students. Choose wisely and apply for as many as you qualify.
  3. The Forum Foundation LGBT Scholarships: Award varies
    This scholarship application deadline is every May every year. As of today, May 17, 2017, time is running out to apply but there is enough time to apply for 2018 scholarship.

The following resources are more national LGBTQ scholarships resources that you should go through one at a time and find out if you qualify. Do not leave money on the table

These resources will prove to be more beneficial if you looked at them first before jumping on to state-specific scholarships.

  14. College Resource Network: Search their LGBT scholarship network, all from one place
  15. Point Foundation: Several hundreds of scholarships offered. Take advantage of as many as you can.
  16. The League Foundation: Has more than 10 scholarships available.
  17. scholarships.com: There are currently over 40 LGBT scholarships listed here. This is a great resource.
  18. finaid.org: More than 60 LGBT scholarships listed, most without academic major restrictions. Meaning they can be applied in nursing school.

Alabama LGBT Nursing Scholarships

  1. Elliot Jackson Jones Scholarship: $1000 award starting 2018 January
    The Elliot Jackson Jones Scholarship is awarded to individuals who continuously find new ways to positively support the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer student population at the University of Alabama.

  2. UAB Alliance for LGBT Equality Scholarship: $1000 Award
    Every year, the Alliance gives a $1,000 Scholarship to UAB students who are involved with the community.
    On the application page, you will find dozens of more scholarships that may apply to you – even if they are not LGBT specific.
  3. The David Womack Memorial Alabama LGBT Scholarship: $1000 Award:
    This scholarship is available to any lesbian or gay undergrad student from the state of Alabama. This scholarship has very basic requirements. See application page.

Closing thoughts about LGBT Nursing Scholarships:

It is advisable to apply to as many scholarships as possible. Being a member of the LGBT community does not mean you cannot apply for other scholarships not specific to gender or sexual orientation. There are literally hundreds of thousands of scholarships offered by local organizations, even local hospitals.

    I am a faculty advisor and I share with students at my college generally incase they identify in the community, but are not open. Some of the dates listed are a couple of years old. How often are these updated?
