National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) Scholarships
NBNA has a good list of dozens of scholarships available for grabs. Most of NBNA scholarships requires the participating nurse to meet the following easy requirements:
- You must be currently enrolled in a nursing program (BSN, AD, Diploma, or LPN/LVN)
- You must be in good scholastic standing at the time of application. GPA requirements vary.
- You must be a member of NBNA and of a local chapter (if one exists in his or her area) and have at least one full year of school remaining. The earlier you apply in your nursing program, the better.
- This specific award is given to a student nurse based on scholastic achievement, financial need, and community service.
Here are the scholarships and how to apply for each one of them:
- Lauranne Sams Scholarship.
To apply for this scholarship, you need to be a member of either a member of national NBNA or local chapter.
You can submit your application via email to [email protected] or simply use NBNA website to apply. - NBNA Board of Directors Scholarship: This scholarship offers $1000-$2000
- Must meet all NBNA requirements as above
- Must be in a 2 or 4 years nursing program
- Must be taking full time hours in college (not for part-time college)
- Apply through NBNA scholarship portal
- Lynne Edwards Research Scholarship: This scholarship has a minimum award of $1000 per student every student should apply. This scholarship, besides meeting all requirements of NBNA, requires the following:
- Official transcripts of an accredited nursing school
- 2 pages written essay
- 2 letters of recommendation, one from the nursing school and another one from NBNA local chapter in your area
- A clean & clear professional passport photo
- Involvement in African American activities in your local area
- Participation in student nurse activities in your schoolMail your complete application to

- Hilda Richards Scholarship: This scholarship offers $1000-2000 per qualifying student.
- All black nursing students applying for this scholarship must meet NBNA requirements.

- You must be a member of an ethnic or racial minority group:
- Asian or Asian American
- Black or African American
- Hispanic or Latino
- American Indian or Alaska Native
- Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander
- You must be a member of an ethnic or racial minority group:
- Applicants must have a Master’s Degree or completed at least nine (9) credits related to Psychiatric/Mental Health or Substance Abuse.
- Must be a US citizen or a permanent resident.
- You must be enrolled as a full-time doctoral student in a fully accredited nursing program.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF)
TMFC offers more than 500 scholarships a year especially to students attending historically black colleges and universities.
The following are the requirements of TMCF scholarships
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at Howard University, North Carolina A&T State University and Lincoln University at Pennsylvania.
- Have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher
- Have demonstrated leadership ability through a variety of measures
- Demonstrate need through FAFSA
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551
- Open to college juniors and seniors
- 2017-2018 Student Aid Report (received from filing FAFSA)
- Most recent transcript (official or unofficial)
- Recommendation from current school professor or faculty member (recommending professor must complete online form)
- Essay: *In a maximum of 500 words, please address the following question: What do you consider to be a particularly pressing issue or challenge for college students right now? How do you believe this issue or challenge could be solved?

The following schools belong to historically black universities and have nursing programs. African American in these schools stands a better chance of bagging lucrative scholarship towards their nursing degree.
- Bethune-Cookman University in South Carolina: The School of Nursing designs a program that educates individuals to become registered nurses at the baccalaureate degree level.
- Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
- Fisk University in Tennessee. Fisk University has a very broad affiliation with other higher nursing education centers like University of Chicago and Vanderbilt University. They also have scholarships for online nursing bridge programs.
- Florida Memorial University. This traditionally African-American university is also affiliated with Miami University and Florida International University. Through these affiliations, nursing students have an opportunity to work up their way to post graduate programs like CRNA at the University of Miami.
- Jarvis Christian College. Jarvis Christian College is an independent four-year, historically black college affiliated with the Christian Church. It is located in unincorporated Wood County, Texas, near Hawkins. It is also affiliated with UT Tyler school of Nursing
- Oakwood University, Alabama: Oakwood University is a private, historically black university located in Huntsville, Alabama. It is owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Oakwood offers BSN nursing programs and RN-BSN bridge programs.
- Paine College in Augusta, Georgia: Paine College is a private, coeducational historically black liberal arts college located in Augusta, Georgia, affiliated with the United Methodist Church and Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Paine College offers the Pre-Nursing Program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). This program offers students a way to begin at Paine College and continue their studies at the International University of Nursing (IUON), St. Kitts as part of a unique, flexible, and collaborative education experience. - Philander Smith College, Little Rock – Arkansas. Philander Smith College is a private historically black college, four-year undergraduate liberal arts institution, located in Little Rock, Arkansas. Lots of nursing scholarship opportunities
