Nursing program

  • The William Paterson University Nursing training program is a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing training program which requires 123.5 college credits. The syllabus has been revised to an upper division program requiring all prerequisite and also most University Core Curriculum (general education) courses be completed before taking any NUR prefixed courses.
  • A completion of the degree requires Nursing major pupils to complete all courses within 6-semesters of your first nursing clinical course (NUR 3280). Clinical lab courses are conducted in the different clinical agencies all through New Jersey. Pupils are required to have their transportation for these clinical lab courses. Organizations utilized frequently include but are not limited to Hackensack University Medical Center, St. Joseph ‘s Hospital, Atlantic Health System, St. Clare’s Health System, and Medical Center along with the Valley Health System.
  • The nursing core sequence of courses starts in both Spring and also Fall semesters and also continue for two academic years. Students looking for a part-time option are advised the nursing core courses have been created in clusters to ensure that certain courses must be taken

  • Established in the year 1855, William Paterson is the second most ancient of the nine state colleges and also universities in New Jersey. William Paterson offers undergraduate, graduate and also doctoral degrees via its five academic colleges. Following are the minimum requirements for BSN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

The prerequisites are:

  • BIO 1120 – General Anatomy & Physiology I
  • BIO 1130 – General Anatomy & Physiology II
  • BIO 1700 – Basic Microbiology
  • PSY 1100 – General Psychology
  • PSY 2110 – Lifespan Development
  • CHEM 1330 – Chemistry for Health Sciences
  • MATH 1300 – Elementary Statistics
  • NUR 3500 – Nursing Research
  • PBHL 2240 – Therapeutic Nutrition
  • BIO 3120 Advanced Anatomy & Physiology

The department does not offer an LPN or an associate’s degree for RN. The University admits qualified freshmen, transfer, second-degree, re-admit, and international students to the program for fall semesters only (Licensed RN’s – can be admitted in fall and spring).  The admission process is highly competitive and a high GPA may enhance an individual’s opportunity for selection.

Freshman Applicants

For first consideration, candidates must submit all materials by the Nursing Priority deadline of December 1:

  • Application, high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores.

The minimum academic profile for first consideration for Freshman Nursing admission is:

  • A 3.00 cumulative high school grade point average, and
  • Completion of high school Biology/lab and Chemistry/lab, with grades of “B” or better, and
  • One of the following:
  • A “New” SAT score of 1130, with a minimum Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 550. Equivalent ACT scores will be considered.
  • An “Old” SAT score of 1050 in Critical Reading and Math, with a minimum Critical Reading score of 500. WPUNJ does not use the Writing section of the Old SAT for admission.  Equivalent ACT scores will be considered.

Transfer, Second-Degree, Re-admit, and International Students:

  • Successful applicants have an average GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Completion of pre-requisites increase your chances for acceptance into the major
  • Applicants who have been dismissed from another nursing program will not be accepted.
  • Applicants who received a grade of C- or below in any nursing course or nursing prerequisite courses will not be accepted even if the course has been repeated.
  • Applicants must follow the universities application process for review by the Nursing Admission’s Committee. Students will be notified of a decision within 8 – 10 weeks.
  • Students accepted into the nursing major must complete all the required prerequisite courses (or equivalents) and University Core Curriculum courses before they will be permitted to register for nursing courses. Accepted students will be assigned a nursing advisor to assist them in planning.

Change of Major for Enrolled Students

Students enrolled in the University may apply for a change of major after completing twelve (12) credits at William Paterson. To be considered for Nursing, the student must have completed at least one of the following:  BIO 1120, BIO 1130, BIO 1700, BIO 3120 or CHEM1330 at William Paterson. Students choosing to change their major are encouraged to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Upon meeting these requirements, the student needs to apply for a change of major online in WPconnect for review by the department. The deadline for change of major is February 1; students should be notified within eight to ten weeks of the decision.
