About the school

Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) is a community college district with its HQ in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It was established in 1967.

The College was founded in 1967 by the Legislature of the State of Michigan, and its initial seven-member Board of Trustees was selected the following year. The first operating budget was gotten based on a $1,000,000 grant from the State of Michigan, as well as a $300,000 stipend from New Detroit, Inc., and projected student tuition payments at that time.

The new College had no facilities or buildings of its own, but with the collaboration of local school boards, classrooms were made accessible throughout the County of Wayne. In the summer of 1969, the Board of Trustees instructed the staff to set up classes for the first fall semester. Curricula were planned, Instructors were hired, and the College opened its doors.

The College’s five campuses are located in rural, industrial, and metropolitan areas.
