Nursing program
The nursing program offers hands-on experience working on a simulated mannequin able to emulate real-life situations—everything from giving birth to going into cardiac arrest.
Clinical experience sets skills and knowledge learned in the classroom, and kind instructors will guide you through every step of the program.
The Southwestern Michigan College nursing program is presently seeking accreditation with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and is a candidate for accreditation.
Students will be qualified to earn their RN license after completing the two-year degree successfully. Students must take the National Licensing Examination to earn the RN designation.
About the school
Southwestern Michigan College is a public community college with its main campus near Dowagiac, Michigan while the Niles Campus is situated just outside the city limits of Niles, Michigan.
Southwestern Michigan College was established on November 19, 1964, after the electorate of Cass County, Michigan endorsed a 1.5 million dollar tax levy to fund a Cass County Community College. On September 12, 1965, the ground was broken for the main campus in Dowagiac, Michigan. Classes commenced at Southwestern Michigan College in September 1966.
The Higher Learning Commission of North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Southwestern Michigan College. Southwestern Michigan College is currently a member of the American Association of Community Colleges.

Program Information
- Pre-nursing classes can be completed at either campus.
- Students must take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to earn the RN designation.
- Our graduates had a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX for the second quarter of 2015; the national average was 85%.
- Application for admission to the Southwestern Michigan College nursing program is a separate process from being admitted to the college. Students must apply for admission to the nursing program within the application deadlines. Students must first apply to SMC then contact the Nursing Specialty Advisor as soon as possible to establish a program of study and to learn all of the nursing program requirements.
- Admission to the nursing program is highly competitive and is not guaranteed. There are admission requirements to the nursing program, and it is the student’s responsibility to understand and meet the requirements prior to admission.
- Admission into the program is based on a competitive GPA of 3.0 or better in prerequisite courses. Students must work with an academic advisor to plan their prerequisite course sequence and to apply to the nursing program. The advisor will explain ADN selection and all that is needed for acceptance into the nursing program.
- Forty students are admitted to the nursing program each fall and spring semester. Admission is based on an eight-point scale determined by GPA.
- Articulation agreements exist between Southwestern Michigan College and Ferris State University and Bethel College.
Prerequisites
- Students will need to demonstrate proficiencies in reading, mathematics and English based on SMC assessment tests, ACT or SAT scores, or by taking the recommended courses.
- Some of the courses in this curriculum have specific prerequisites that may not be listed as part of the degree requirements. These are described in the course descriptions
- Students are expected to be college prepared and have had high school chemistry, biology and math within the past 5 years. Students who have been out of high school for more than five years must take CHEM 100 and MATH 101 or test out.
- Students will be required to undergo a criminal background check and drug screening.
