Nursing Program
Southwestern Illinois College’s Nursing Education (NE) program offers students the basic skills required to become a registered nurse (RN).
After completion of the Nursing Education course, graduates are eligible to seek the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Upon completion of the NCLEX-RN examination, they can apply for licensure as a registered professional nurse.
Nursing programs at Southwestern Illinois College are within the Health Sciences and Homeland Security Division. The Nursing program at Southwestern Illinois College has the accreditation of the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

Southwestern Illinois College is known to be the fifth largest community college in Illinois with campuses in Granite City, Belleville, and Red Bud, plus 20 off-campus locations throughout the district, including the East St. Louis Community College Center and Scott Air Force Base.
The college provides over 150 diverse programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree or straight to employment. SWIC also provides the community with Programs and Services for Older Persons (PSOP), Community Education, and Selsius™ Corporate and Career Training.
Southwestern Illinois College has the accreditation of The Higher Learning Commission. More than 13,000 students are trained at the rural college every year. The college was founded in 1946.

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
Students must apply and be formally accepted into the Nursing Education program before beginning program courses.
Applicants must submit the following to the Enrollment Services Office:
- Nursing Education application
Applications are available between Sept. 1 and Dec. 1 each year for summer start.
Supporting documentation (transcripts, test scores, etc.) must be on file by identified deadlines.
Proof of completion of prerequisite courses: biology, algebra and chemistry.
- Official Transcripts
Official high school transcripts or proof of GED
Official transcripts from all colleges, universities or accredited schools of Nursing Education attended
SWIC transcript evaluation form, a requirement for the transfer of credits from another institution
- Test Scores
Nursing Entrance Exam – Taken after application is submitted
SWIC placement testing – The placement test identifies skill levels in math, reading and writing. Students must score high enough to be eligible to enroll in ENG 101 and MATH 97. If placement test results are too low, students must complete required developmental courses prior to enrolling in ENG 101, BIOL 157/158 or MATH 94.
