Nursing Program
The Nursing program at South Maine Community College prepares individuals to become registered nurses (RN) at the associate degree level. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX exam to become Registered Nurses (RN) for entry into practice. At the school, graduate NCLEX pass rate is constantly above the national average.
The curriculum combines nursing and general education courses to offer a sound academic base for nursing practice. Various clinical experiences are synchronized with didactic experiences throughout the four semesters. Students are mandated to meet clinical objectives or earn a course grade of C (76) or better in to receive a passing grade. In the case of a failure, students could apply for readmission/reinstatement to the Nursing program but only once.
About the School
SMCC was established in 1946 in Augusta, and it opened as the Maine Vocational Technical Institute to take care of returning World War II veterans who desired to learn new skills as the economy moved from wartime to peace. When it grew beyond its space in Augusta, MVTI moved to SMCC’s current location in 1952, on the site of then decommissioned Fort Preble facing Casco Bay in South Portland.
The college now serves over 6,000 students from around the state and the globe, offering over 40 degree and certificate programs at the campuses in Brunswick and South Portland, online and at satellite locations all through southern Maine.
SMCC graduates usually enter the workforce or continue their education at a baccalaureate college of university directly. SMCC has agreements that provide seamless transfer choices to about 70-degree programs at more than 20 colleges and universities.
Total program cost for in-state-residents is around $16,954.00 while out-of-state residents are expected to spend around $29,000.00
