Nursing Program
South Florida State College’s Nursing (Generic – RN) program allows individuals who are not Licensed Practical Nurse (LPNs) to earn their AS degree in two years qualify to take the NCLEX exam for licensure as an RN. Through classroom study, simulations, laboratory exercises, and clinical experiences in different healthcare environment, students obtain the knowledge, approach, and nursing expertise required to succeed in their career.
SFSC’s are accredited by The Accreditation Commission for Excellence in Nursing (ACEN) accredited the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs. This esteemed accreditation assures that these programs attain national standards of educational excellence.
About The School
South Florida State College (SFSC) was founded in 1965 and serves around 16,000 students annually with campuses in Highlands measuring 228 acres and two miles (3 km) south of Avon Park; other campuses are situated in DeSoto and Hardee counties.
The college is on an isthmus, surrounded on the north by Lake Lelia, to the west by U.S. Highway 27 and the south by Lake Glenada. It is a member of the Florida College System. The name “South Florida State College” took effect from 2012.
It is a public college awarding occupational certificates, college credit certificates, and associate degrees in over 60 programs as well as a bachelor of science degrees elementary education and nursing and a bachelor of applied science degree in business management and supervision. SFSC partners with other four-year colleges and universities to offer certain bachelor’s and master’s degrees through the SFSC University Center.
Specialized courses are designed for adult education needs, and coursework is delivered through a blend of conventional classroom and distance learning coaching.
The total program cost for residents is $7/525.44 and $28,390.23 for non-residents.
Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
Generic Registered Nursing (RN) – Associate in Science (AS) Degree

Generic Registered Nursing (RN) is a selective enrollment program that accepts students each fall term. All applicants must meet the minimum requirements to be considered for admission. Applicants are not guaranteed admission because they have met the minimum requirements.
Application Process
Complete the steps of the application process in this order:
- Apply to South Florida State College and complete prerequisite courses.
- Complete a Minimum Admissions Requirements (MAR) Review.
- Complete the online application to the Generic RN program.
- Achieve competitive scores on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).
- Submit student references.
- Attend new student orientation: Guide to Personal Success (GPS).
I.Apply to South Florida State College and Complete Prerequisite Courses
Complete a General Student Application to South Florida State College.
Send official high school transcript or GED transcript to the Admissions Office.
Send official transcripts from all the colleges or schools you have attended since high school to the Admissions Office.
Complete the following prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of C and a GPA of 2.5. Credits from science classes must be less than seven years old.
MAC 1105 – College Algebra
ENC 1101 – Freshman English I
BSC 1085C – Anatomy and Physiology I
BSC 1086C – Anatomy and Physiology II
PSY 2012 – General Psychology
DEP 1004 – Human Development
MCB 2010C – Microbiology

- Complete a Minimum Admissions Requirements (MAR) Review
Applicants must complete a MAR Review before they are considered for admission to the er0Generic RN program. You are encouraged to complete your MAR Review as early as possible so that you may finish the additional steps in the application process before the application period ends.
During the Generic RN program application period, the health sciences specialist conducts MAR Reviews by appointment only Monday-Friday, 8 a.m-3 p.m. To schedule your MAR Review, call 863-784‑7027 or email [email protected]
III. Apply to the Generic RN Program
Complete an online application to the Generic RN program.
- Achieve Competitive Score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
SFSC’s Nursing Department uses the TEAS exam to determine whether applicants are academically prepared for learning nursing-related content. To be considered for admission to the Generic RN program, you must submit a copy of your TEAS Transcript to the health sciences specialist before the application period ends.
You may schedule the TEAS exam through the Testing and Assessment Center, or submit scores from a TEAS exam you took within the past five years. Scores from TEAS exams taken at other colleges are also accepted.
You may take the TEAS at any time during the year. Once you complete the exam, you will receive instructions for accessing your results. If you do not earn the minimum scores, you may retake the TEAS up to three times during a calendar year while waiting three months between each attempt. If you wish to improve your scores, you must retake the entire exam.
Generic RN Nursing target scores are 75% Reading, 65% English, 65% Science, and 65% Math.

- Submit Student References
After your MAR Review is completed, obtain three written references as follows:
One – from your current or most recent employer or instructor
Two – professional references
The Nursing Department prefers that the person providing the reference mails it directly to the health sciences specialist. However, references will also be accepted if they are hand-delivered by the applicant in a sealed envelope that contains the reference’s signature across the back flap.
- Attend New Student Orientation
All new students and students returning to SFSC after an absence of two or more years are required to attend new student orientation, Guide to Personal Success (GPS). After you submit your application to South Florida State College (step I), you will receive an email invitation that explains your options for attending orientation. You may select an orientation that is convenient for you; however, you must complete orientation before you can register for classes.

Selection Process
Once applicants have completed all steps in the admission process and have been found to meet the minimum requirements for admission, they are ranked by their TEAS scores and their prerequisite GPA. Only courses completed by the end of the spring term are used for ranking. Courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. In May successful applicants receive an email that explains how they may reserve their seat. Any unclaimed seat is offered to the next qualified applicant. Once all seats are claimed, an email is sent to applicants who were not accepted.
