• Newark pupils enter as a freshman or perhaps transfer into the nursing training program in the summer before the beginning of their sophomore year.
• The Second Degree BS in Nursing Training program is meant for students who already have a Bachelor’s degree in a different discipline.
• The 14-month second-degree training program is fast-paced and also intense, they require students to provide complete attention to the rigor and also requirements for successful completion.

Following are the minimum requirements for BSN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

Admission to the School of Nursing is open for the fall semester of each year for high school students enrolling in the Generic Baccalaureate Nursing Program. The Baccalaureate Nursing Program is a four-year academic program leading to a Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing degree for students applying directly from high school.

In general, the School of Nursing will expect a student who is applying directly from high school to have completed the following courses:

• English: 4 years
• Foreign Language: None required
• Mathematics: 3 years, including algebra I, geometry, algebra II
• Science: 1 year each of biology and chemistry
• Other Courses: 7 other academic courses
• Total: 16 academic courses

Please note that these are the minimum requirements for your file to be reviewed for admission. Additional coursework in other areas of study, as well as a balance of other activities will also be considered during the review process.

The average SAT score for admission consideration depends on competitiveness of the applicant pool.  There is no singular score that is recognized as a median. However, as with anything else in applying to college, the higher the SAT scores, the better your chances. The University will accept a combination of the highest score you received

These elements of the entire admissions application, from transcript to SAT scores to extra-curricular activities, to personal statements, are taken into consideration to determine admission into the program.

Second degree admission

Admission to the Second Degree Program is open for the fall and spring semester of each year. The program is designed for the student who already possesses a bachelor’s degree in another field.

Prerequisites

In addition to requirements outlined in the NursingCAS application  The School of Nursing requires specific prerequisites to be completed before one is accepted into the program:

• A Baccalaureate degree with a recommended 3.30 GPA or above (where A = 4.0).
• Statistics – 3 credits
• Anatomy and Physiology I and II – 4 credits each w/ labs (8 credits total)
• Organic Biochemistry or General Chemistry II – 4 credits w/ lab
• Microbiology – 4 credits w/ lab
• Nutrition – 3 credits
• Life Span: Growth and Development – 3 credits

1. All of the prerequisite courses must be undergraduate 100 level or higher.
2. All sciences must be completed within 5 years of acceptance to the program. No time limitation on all other courses.
3. All science prerequisite courses must be completed prior to the application deadline (June 1st for Fall, September 15th for Spring). Students can submit an application with science course(s) in progress, but are required to provide proof of registration for the course(s). Additionally, the final grade for the science course(s) in progress must be received by June 1 for Fall and by September 15 for Spring to be considered for admission.
4. A grade of 3.0 or higher is required in both Anatomy and Physiology courses. Students not meeting this requirement are encouraged to retake the course(s) at a regionally accredited college or university.
5. An overall grade of (3.0) or higher is required for the science courses.
6. All other prerequisite courses are required to be completed with a grade of C or better prior to enrollment in this program.
7. While it is strongly recommended that all pre-requisite courses be completed at the time of application, students who have two non-science prerequisite courses pending at the time of application will be considered. You are required to submit proof of registration for any pending prerequisite course(s). All pending non-science prerequisite courses must be completed by the time the student enters Rutgers School of Nursing.
