Nursing Program
The Nursing program is intended to offer a career mobility path for persons interested in health care. The curriculum is a concept-centered method of instruction promoting critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, clinical reasoning and nursing judgment.
Successful graduates will be equipped to practice professional nursing in a range of health care settings. Students must achieve a grade of “C” or better in every course, and demonstrate proficiency in math skills and dosage calculations.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation endorsed this program. After graduation, the student is qualified to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
About the school
Rend Lake College is a two-year, open-admission colleges located in Ina, Illinois and among of the 48 member Illinois Community College System (ICCS), structured under the Illinois Public Community College Act.
Rend Lake College was founded in 1955 as Mt. Vernon Community College to enable students from High School District No. 201 the chance to receive a post-secondary education equivalent to university curriculum. Illinois General Assembly authorized Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) to formulate a Master Plan for Higher Education in the state of Illinois which led to the Junior College Act of 1965.
Soon after, the institution was formally renamed Rend Lake College when it was restructured in December 20, 1966.

Rend Lake College maintains an open-door admission policy that provides access to higher education for those individuals who can benefit from its comprehensive programs. Admission to the college does not guarantee entrance into a particular course or program of study since applicants may have to meet specific requirements for entrance into certain programs. In addition, students are required to complete specified prerequisites prior to enrollment in certain courses. There is no discrimination in the admission or recruitment of students on the basis of age, disability, marital status, military status, national origin, race, religion, sex or other legally protected status.
Prospective students should apply to the Student Records office in advance of their expected starting date as registration priority is given to early applicants. Applications are available at the college, on the college’s website HERE and at high schools in the RLC district.
Applicants for a certificate or an associate’s degree from Rend Lake College should submit official transcripts from colleges they have attended. Students taking college-level courses must demonstrate college-level competency in language, reading and mathematics. Students entering a degree program or enrolling in a math or English course can determine placement with COMPASS/ASSET scores or ACT/SAT scores.
