Nursing Program

Prairie State College Nursing Program offers a rigorous academic and professional program preparing candidates for careers in nursing. Upon graduation, you will serve as a practitioner of nursing in a range of health care settings, offering and managing direct care through well-defined nursing procedures.

Prairie State College Nursing Program has been awarded full accreditation by ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing) through the year 2021. Upon fulfillment of the Prairie State College Nursing Program, students are awarded the Associate in Applied Science in Nursing degree.

This degree allows one to apply to take the NCLEX-RN licensure examination to become a registered nurse. The first Associate of Applied Science in Nursing was granted to students in 1966.

About the school

Prairie State College is a public two-year college located in Chicago Heights, Illinois, and the only college run by Illinois Community College District. It was founded in 1957 as Bloom Township Junior College to offer only occupational-technical courses and transfer liberal arts courses.

The College was restructured in 1967 as a Class I junior college. With the amalgamation of four high school districts into an enlarged territory, Bloom Township Junior College became Prairie State College. The Fitness Complex, a distinctive partnership among the Chicago Heights Park District, PSC, and St. James Hospital and Health Centers, unveiled in 2001.

Total program cost is about $38,432.00

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements by February 1 in order to be considered for Fall semester program admission.

Assessment Scores

All program applicants are required to to take the College’s placement test. If the results of this examination indicate a need for developmental courses, these must be completed with “C” grades prior to February 1.

Transcripts

All academic transcripts must be submitted to PSC by February 1.

English: Successful completion of ENG 099 or an assessment test placement score of ENG 101 or higher

Mathematics: Successful completion of PSC’s MATH 090 or any assessment test placement score of MATH 095 or higher

Reading: Successful completion of reading courses through PSC’s RDG 099 or an assessment test placement score of RDG 105

Program Prerequisites

BIOL 221- Human Anatomy & Physiology

Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant Program (PSC NURS 100) or any other Illinois Department of Public Health CNA course and current status on the Illinois CNA registry
