Nursing program
The College of Nursing and Allied Health in the Northwestern State University of Louisiana was established in 1949 and has graduated more than 7000 students since inception.
This college is renowned for the three major nursing programs; Associate Degree Nursing programs, BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and MSN (Masters of Science in Nursing) with two radiologic sciences programs (MSRS and BSRS).
About the school
Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU) was founded in the year 1884 as Normal School in the State of Louisiana with the aim to provide degree programs in Business education and nursing as the first school in Louisiana to do so.
It is a four-year university located in Natchitoches, Louisiana, with the campus in Shreveport serving as the nursing campus while the circular campuses are in Alexandria and Leesville/Fort Polk.
Northwestern State University of Louisiana is a member institution of the University of Louisiana System. It later attained a university status in 1970.
NSU entered into a NASA’s Joint Venture Program (“JOVE”) as one of the first six colleges to do same. That program allowed students to work with NASA scientists in analyzing data and carrying out research for the 1996 Columbia Space Shuttle mission.
Total program cost for residents is about $28,960 and $61,332 for non-residents

Louisiana High School Graduates:
Meet the following criteria for REGULAR Admission:
- Complete Regents’ Core Curriculum (19 units)
- AND Earn Minimum 2.35 Cumulative High School GPA
- AND 18 or Higher ACT English Subscore (450 SAT, 68 COMPASS Writing) OR 19 or Higher ACT Math Subscore (460 SAT, 40 COMPASS Algebra)
- AND High School Core GPA 2.00 or 20 ACT (940 SAT)
Meet the following criteria for CONDITIONAL Admission to the NSU CO-REQUISITE PROGRAM:
The Louisiana Board of Regents approved a pilot program at NSU effective with the fall 2014 semester. Students admitted thru the Co-Requisite Program are admitted CONDITIONALLY and must complete the required English or math lab within three consecutive semesters to continue at NSU.
- Complete Regents’ Core Curriculum (19 units)
- AND Earn Minimum 2.35 Cumulative High School GPA
- AND achieve one of the following criteria:
- 18 or higher ACT English sub score (450 SAT, 68 COMPASS Writing) AND
- 17 or higher ACT Math sub score (420 SAT, 31 COMPASS Algebra)
OR
- 19 or higher ACT Math sub score (460 SAT, 40 COMPASS Algebra) AND
- 16 or higher ACT English sub score (400 SAT, 61 COMPASS Writing)
- AND High School Core GPA 2.00 or 20 ACT (940 SAT)
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION to the NSU/NSTCC Concurrent Enrollment Program (Math ONLY)
Northwestern State University and Northshore Technical Community College have entered into an agreement to deliver developmental course requirements to those students who need more than one developmental course.
The course is taught at NSU by at NSTCC instructor. Students will transfer the grade from NSTCC to NSU at the end of the semester. Students admitted thru the NSU/NSTCC Concurrent Enrollment Program are admitted CONDITIONALLY until competition of the required math lab within three consecutive semesters to continue at NSU.
- Complete Regents’ Core Curriculum (19 units)
- AND Earn Minimum 2.35 Cumulative High School GPA
- AND achieve one of the following criteria:
- 18 or higher ACT English sub score (450 SAT, 68 COMPASS Writing) AND
- 16 or lower ACT Math sub score (400 or lower SAT, 30 or lower COMPASS Algebra)
- AND High School Core GPA 2.00 or 20 ACT (940 SAT)
Out of State High Schools, Non-State Approved High Schools, or Home School Programs:
Meet one of the In-State criteria above OR one of the criteria below:
Less than 19 units, but at least 17 units of the Regents’ Core Curriculum AND Minimum 2.35 Cumulative High School GPA AND 18 or higher ACT English subscore (450 SAT) OR 19 or higher ACT Math subscore (420 SAT)
OR
ACT 23+ (1050 SAT)
AND 18 or higher ACT English subscore (450 SAT, 68 COMPASS Writing) OR 19 or higher ACT Math subscore (460 SAT, 40 COMPASS Algebra)

Failure to disclose past attendance at any post-secondary institution can result in denial of admission and student disciplinary actions.
