Nursing program

Northwest Technical College’s Nursing program offers multiple entries and exit points with alternatives to heap your credentials as you work toward an Associate of Science (AS) degree, students are educated with knowledge and experience in state-of-the-art simulated clinical settings and supervised clinical environments.

Students are assisted in transferring their AS to Bemidji State University, which allows you to conclude a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BS) degree. With an experienced faculty, the college will assist you in choosing the best path to meet your goals. You also have the option to complete coursework on campus or online

The Generic Track for Associate Degree Nursing starts in the fall term, so all deadlines are for fall admission.

The Associate Degree Nursing Step-In program begins spring term.

About the school

Northwest Technical College is a technical college located in Bemidji, Minnesota. It is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. It was established in 1965 as Bemidji Area Vocational Technical Institute. The Higher Learning Commission has accredited northwest Technical College accredites.

Tuition and fees are approximately $14,990

 

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

Application to AD Nursing Major (Licensed Practical Nurse Step-In Option)

Admission to the AD Nursing major is a separate process from admission to NTC and is required in order to enroll in AD (ADNG) Nursing courses. Application to the AD Nursing major consists of the following steps:

  • Complete application to NTC no later than November 1.
  • Take TEAS test prior to application deadline.
    • TEAS practice tests and information about preparation
    • Registering for the TEAS (Note: Limited seats available)
    • Make sure to choose NTC as your school on your TEAS registration.
    • Results must be within the last two years to be acceptable.
    • Students may retest up to two times per semester.
    • TEAS study guides are available at the BSU library.
    • Math Requirement: A college-level math course (College Algebra, Intro to Math Sciences, or equivalent) must be successfully completed, with a grade of “C” or better, prior to program start.

Admission to AD Licensed Practical Nurse Step-In Major

Admission to the AD Nursing major is competitive and limited. Admission is dependent on the number of applications and evidence of meeting the following requirements:

  • TEAS score is the primary deciding factor for admission into the program. Scores of 64 or above will be considered for program acceptance, provided all other Admissions requirements have been met.
  • A GPA of 2.76 or above in combined, related general education courses (math, sciences, etc.) is recommended but is not an independent criterion for admission.
  • Students on current academic probation or suspension will not be considered for acceptance.
  • International students and all students that graduate from a high school outside of the United States must meet these minimum National Council of State Boards of Nursing TOEFL scores:
    • TOEFL written Overall score of 560
    • TOEFL CBT Overall score of 220
    • TOEFL iBT Overall score of 83
  • Current, unencumbered LPN license. License number and state where practicing must be provided.

Applications will be reviewed immediately after the application deadline. The Nursing Admissions Committee will notify applicants of their status. Applicants are responsible for the completion of the requirements and the cost of the testing.

All applicants to the Step-In program will be required to have all  prerequisites completed by the start of the program. Students may be currently enrolled in prerequisites upon application, but will not be allowed to start the program without successful completion of the courses (at a grade level ‘C’ or above).

BIOL 2221     Microbiology  (3 cr)
BIOL 2252     Anatomy & Physiology I (3 cr)
BIOL 2254     Anatomy & Physiology II (3 cr)
CHEM 1100   Intro to Chemistry (4 cr)
ENGL 1111    College Writing I (3 cr)
PSYC 2201     Developmental Psychology (3 cr)
SELECT ONE FROM OPTIONS LISTED:
MATH 1110   College Algebra (3 cr) or
MATH 1930   Introduction to Mathematical Sciences (3 cr)

Additional Requirements for Clinical/Program Eligibility

Clinical requirements must be met prior to program start regardless of scheduled clinical participation dates. Accepted nursing candidates who fail to comply with these requirements may be dismissed.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider/Healthcare Provider CPR certification: Accepted candidates must provide a photocopy of current card/certificate. Certification must be maintained throughout program progression. Note: AHA Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement and will not be accepted.
  • Background studies: Information for completing background studies will be provided after admission. Clear background studies must be on file prior to program start. Any student who is not cleared to provide direct patient care will not be permitted to participate in clinical experiences, thereby rendering the individual ineligible to progress in the nursing program and qualify for a degree in nursing.
  • Upon receiving a candidate’s RSVP accepting a seat in the program, the Nursing department will email instructions and detailed information regarding requirements and submission of documentation. Please do not send immunization information to the Nursing department.
  • Documentation submitted will be monitored for appropriate CPR certification, required immunizations, and current tuberculosis screening.

Onsite Requirements

Onsite requirements for lab and clinical courses will be discussed during program orientation and specified on the class schedule.

    • TEAS study guides are available at the NTC and BSU libraries.
  • Complete the Accuplacer prior to March 1.
    • Accuplacer Registration
    • Complete all areas: Math, reading, writing, and any recommended college readiness courses prior to fall semester.

Before Admission

College readiness courses: A student may be required to enroll in college readiness courses in reading, writing, and math. A student’s scores on the Accuplacer assessment will determine enrollment in college readiness courses. The purpose of college readiness courses is to prepare students for the demands of a college-level curriculum. Credits may vary. College readiness courses must be successfully completed prior to fall semester in order to be enrolled in sequenced program-required courses.

Prerequisite course(s): Must be met prior to taking ADNG prefixed courses. These prerequisites may be transferred in if verification of appropriate course/training was completed through another college or venue.
