Nursing Program

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program in Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Peosta, USA prepares students to assess, strategize, implement and evaluate the health-care needs of patients and clients.

This extensive training program includes specific nursing courses as well as major course specifications in the areas of communication, science, mathematics and social science. Classroom routines are closely correlated with elected learning experiences in hospitals and other health-care functions.

After successful program completion, graduates are qualified to write the National Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become a registered nurse (RN). The program is authorized by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

This program candidates in a statewide articulation program which facilitates the transfer of Associate Degree in Nursing graduates to 4-year institutions within Iowa for the advanced study of nursing.

Nursing courses with a clinical element may not be taken by an individual who has been declined nursing licensure by a board of nursing; whose nursing license/permit is currently probationary, suspended or revoked in any U.S. jurisdiction  or whose nursing license/permit is currently in probationary, suspended or revoked in another country due to disciplinary action.

About the school

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) serves the Iowa counties of Allamakee, Clayton, Chickasaw, Fayette, Howard, Winneshiek, Dubuque, and Delaware counties. It additionally includes sections of Bremer, Buchanan, Jones, Jackson, and Mitchell counties. The institution is often stated as NICC.

There are 2 main campuses – Calmar and Peosta. The Peosta field is fifteen miles west of Dubuque. NICC additionally incorporates a satellite campus in downtown Dubuque. It was founded in 1966.

Originally, the college was called Northeast Iowa Technical Institute (NITI). The institution became a community college in 1988 and was renamed NICC. The college is approved by the Iowa Board of Education to award the Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), and Associate in Applied Science degrees (ASS) and also the GED.

 

Total program cost is USD $11,500

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include: 

  1. Apply for admission.
  2. Submit official high school, high school equivalency and/or college transcripts to the Admissions Office of the campus you plan to attend.
  3. Complete ACCUPLACER® reading and writing assessment and ALEKS® math assessment. Testing may be waived based on previous college coursework or submission of valid ACT®, ACT Compass® or ALEKS® test scores. Scores are valid for three years.

The ADN program is a ladder concept program In addition to the College admission procedures outlined; applicants must complete the HESI A2 Admission assessment and achieve a score of 80 on both the reading and mathematics portions. The following courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C- or above within five years from the date of application:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I [BIO:165] with lab component [BIO:167]
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II [BIO:170] with lab component [BIO:172]
  • Dosage Calculations [PNN:200]
  • Intro to Nutrition [PNN:270]

Once completed, students will be accepted into the Nursing program. Students who graduate from the NICC Practical Nursing program are eligible to complete the sophomore year to achieve an AAS in nursing. Students must meet the admission requirements for entry into the Associate Degree Nursing program. Admission requirements are: Cumulative GPA of 2.2 in all Practical Nursing core courses and achieve a minimum score of 850 on the HESI PN Exit examination.
