Nursing program

  • The School of Nursing at Murray State University provides a program preceding the BACCALAUREATE DEGREE in nursing.
  • Graduates are trained for foundation levels of professional nurse practice and will have attained the educational requirements for suitability to write the state board licensing examination for registered nurses.
  • The core of the program delivers a foundation for continuing education and advanced study in nursing.
  • The program is endorsed by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

 

About the school

  • Murray State University (abbreviated MSU) is located in Murray, Kentucky, United States.
  • It is a four-year public university with an enrollment of about 10,500 students and has continuously been one of the top-ranked public state universities in Kentucky.
  • Besides its main campus, Murray State also has annexes in Paducah, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, and Henderson.

Total estimated cost of attendance is approximately $25,176

 

Following are the minimum requirements for BSN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The Academic Standards and Admissions Committee of the School of Nursing make recommendations regarding admission into the nursing program at Murray State University to the dean of the school. Admission is based on an evaluation of the applicant’s ability and preparation as reflected by GPA and completion of required prerequisite courses. Enrollment is limited and selection is made based upon the highest GPA among those eligible to apply. Students are admitted into nursing spring and fall semesters.

The School of Nursing reserves the right to make changes in policies and procedures in any portion of the student’s program as may be necessary.

 

Students beginning the undergraduate nursing program are subject to the policies listed below:

  1. Admission Requirements:
  2. a) A minimum GPA of 3.0

The GPA for admission to the BSN program will be calculated as follows:
1.) Post Bacculaureate-courses meeting the BSN curriculum requirements.
2.) Students with 120 hours or more-courses meeting the BSN curriculum requirements.
3.) Students with less that 120 hours-the overall GPA as defined by the Degree Audit

  1. b)      Sophomore standing of 30 semester hours of credit or more
  2. c)      Successful completion of the following courses: ENG 105, MAT 140, CHE 111, BIO 101, BIO 227 & 228, COM 161; & PSY 180
  3. d)     A “C” or above in all course work required for the B.S.N.
  4. e)      Students requesting to transfer from another nursing program or who have attended another nursing program in the past must provide a letter from the previous program indicating that they are in good standing to be considered for admission to the BSN program at Murray State. (See progression policy, #7)
  5. f)       Where unusual or extenuating circumstances are indicated, the Dean of the School of Nursing may admit a student who does not meet the above criteria.
  6. Procedure for Admission:
  7. a)      Fulfill the requirements of, and be accepted by the university. Applications can be found online.
  8. b)      Send a written request to the Registrar’s Office for copies of all transcripts, examination scores, etc. be sent to the School of Nursing.
  9. c)      Submit an Application for Admission to the School of Nursing.  Include proof of immunization status (including measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), TB screening, and CPR certification to the School of Nursing. An application and proof of immunization/TB form may be obtained from the faculty advisor or the School of Nursing office.
  10. d)     A faculty advisor in the School of Nursing will be assigned to the student when the student is admitted to the university and your records are received in the School of Nursing.
  11. e)      For Fall semester admission, all materials for review by the Academic Standards and Admissions Committee should be submitted by May 1. For Spring semester admission, materials should be submitted by December 1.

 

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for admission.

  1. Admission is determined based on a scoring formula that includes GPA and grades in prerequisite courses.
  2.  The Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) is required for all non-licensed nursing applicants with English as a second language. The minimum requirements are as follows:

The minimum cumulative score of:

86 combined

AND minimum individual scores of:

26 in Speaking

20 in Writing

20 in Reading

20 in Listening

  1. Registered nurses holding current United States licensure may be required to take the TOEFL iBT or other testing before or during the course of the program, if recommended by the Dean of the School of Nursing.
  2. The student is expected to contact her/his advisor for assistance in developing a plan of study.
