Nursing Program

The Professional Nursing training program in Metropolitan Community College plan leads to the Associate in Applied Science in nursing degree. The ADN or Associate of Applied Science is a two (2) year degree.

Beginning pupils are prepared to take and sit the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses. Graduates who successfully pass the examination can accept entry-level jobs in acute, intermediate and long-term care centers.

The nursing training program is completely endorsed by the Missouri State Board of Nursing and is certified by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Upon successful completion of the training program, the graduate is expected to file an application with the Missouri State Board of Nursing to write and take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for the registered professional nurse (RN). After successful completion of the exam, a license will be awarded for the graduate to practice as a certified nurse in the State of Missouri.

About The School

In the year 1915, the Kansas City community was asking for local higher education options. Due to the growing demand, the Kansas City school board endorsed the post-secondary education experiment known as, the Kansas City Polytechnic Institute.

As Kansas City extended into the suburbs in the 1960s, so did Metropolitan Community College, starting the Longview, Maple Woods, and also Penn Valley campuses in the year 1969. In the year 1980’s and 1990’s, the Park Hill, the Blue Springs, Independence and Fort Osage school districts joined up with the MCC region. Blue River Community College was called the 4th campus in the year 1997, and the Business & Technology campus was added in the year 2002.

In December of 2005, all five campuses combined to be one Metropolitan Community College. The objective was to build a more unified district to serve the demands of pupils all around the Greater Kansas City region.

Submit all official non-MCCKC transcripts to the Student Data Center – Transcripts (from all colleges and universities you have attended except MCCKC

• Take the ACCUPLACER test

This is a requirement for all applicants. Accuplacer tests can be completed at any of the five (5) MCC campuses. The Accuplacer must be less than three (3)years old. Required Accuplacer  scores for this program:

Algebra 86

• Any developmental courses required based on Accuplacer scores must be completed with a grade of “C” or better before applying.
• ACT/SAT scores will not be accepted in place of Accuplacer scores.
• Take prerequisites
• Introduction to Cell Biology (BIOL 100) OR Introductory Chemistry for Health Sciences (CHEM 105).
• General Psychology (PSYC 140).
• Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 109) OR Human Anatomy (BIOL 110) and Human Physiology (BIOL 210).
• All prerequisites and courses within the curriculum plan must be completed with a minimum grade of “C”.
• Science courses in the curriculum cannot be over five (5) years old at the time of application.
• If BIOL 208, Microbiology, is five (5) or more years old at the time of application, it is expired and cannot receive the ranking point for having it completed. You will be required to repeat BIOL 208.
• With the exception of BIOL 208, Microbiology, if science courses in the curriculum were taken more than five (5) years prior to the application date, but are less than ten (10) years old, they may be accepted (“grand-fathered”) by taking a higher level science in the curriculum. Any science course in the curriculum that was taken ten (10) or more years prior to the application period must be repeated prior to the application period.
• BIOL 110, Human Anatomy, and BIOL 210, Human Physiology are the equivalent of BIOL 109, Anatomy and Physiology, and, therefore, considered one course and cannot be split for BIOL 210 to grandfather BIOL 208.
• Any course taken for credit by examination (CLEP) will receive a grade of “C.”
• Meet GPA requirement
• A combined 2.75 GPA for above prerequisite courses is required.
• ATI TEAS exam
• The ATI TEAS exam must be taken prior to the start of any given application period.
