Nursing program

  • There Are Two Pathways to Becoming a Registered Nurse through Mercy College. You can enlist in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) training program that will develop you in as little as 3-years to take the NCLEX-RN examination. There is also an original training program pathway that incorporates the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) with the RN to BSN training program allowing nurses to work and also study while completing their Bachelor’s degree. Both pathways will prepare you as a registered nurse to practice in various health care settings.
  • Mercy College’s BSN training program is an 8-semester curriculum with 2-semesters of liberal arts and science courses and also 6-semesters of nursing courses.
  • By enrolling in the Mercy College BSN training program, you will be joining nursing faculty and students across the nation striving to obtain the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) national objective of achieving an 80% BSN-prepared nursing workforce by 2020.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Nursing training program is certified by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and has the authorization of the Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON).

About the school

  • Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCHS) is a college situated in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, United States of America. The Sisters of Mercy founded it in the year 1899.
    In 1893, 3-sisters from Mercy Hospital in Davenport, Iowa established a hospital in Des Moines, IA, USA.
  • Their very first place was Hoyt Sherman Place, and in the year 1899 Mercy Hospital Training School was founded. It developed into Mercy School of Health Sciences, from which Mercy College of Health Sciences was founded in downtown Des Moines in the year 1995. The Higher Learning Commission accredits Mercy College of Health Sciences.

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

To be considered for admission to the BSN major, applicants must be admitted to Mercy College and meet the criteria listed below. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to a major.

  1. Students seeking admission to the BSN major must earn an extracted GPA of 2.5 of the LAS courses listed: English Composition I, College Level Math, General Psychology, Human Anatomy with lab, Human Physiology with lab and Microbiology with lab; and achieve a grade of “C” or higher (not “C-”) in each course.
  2. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all first and second semester courses prior to beginning the third semester.

RN-BSN REQUIREMENT

To be considered for admission to the RN to BSN major, applicants must be admitted to Mercy College and meet the criteria listed below. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to a major.

  1. Provide an official transcript from an accredited diploma or associate degree nursing program, and official transcripts from any other college(s).
  2. Fall 2016: Achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students who do not meet the required 2.5 GPA will need to take a minimum of 9 LAS credits to meet the GPA. Students are encouraged to take LAS courses at Mercy College. As of Spring 2017: Meet Mercy College of Health Sciences admission requirements, or be a graduate of Mercy College of Health Sciences.

3.Submit a copy of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse or demonstrate progress toward licensure.

Applicants desiring to begin RN to BSN course work who have not passed the NCLEX-RN examination may take nursing classes for one semester on a provisional basis. Full admission will be granted upon receipt of licensure.
