Nursing program
The professional nursing associate of science (AS) leading to becoming an RN is awarded at Lake Superior College. After you acquire your professional nursing AS degree, you are eligible to take the (NCLEX-RN / National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses).
The nursing program begins with the basics. Firstly the students learn theory and perform clinical course work in a lab setting on campus. Afterward, they work in a clinical environment such as long-term care facilities or local hospitals.
About the school
Lake Superior College (LSC) is a two-year community and technical college situated in Duluth, Minnesota.
The college awards over 90 certificates, diploma and degree programs in career and technical fields as well as pre-baccalaureate majors for students interested in transferring to four-year educational institutions. Courses in LSC are usually offered in traditional classroom and lab settings, but it also provides about 150 courses via the internet, through its e-campus.
Lake Superior College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Tuition and fees are approximately $10,174
Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
Part 1: Selection Criteria for Acceptance to Nursing Programs
Ranking of applicants will be based on the following criteria:
- TEAS V composite score divided by a factor of 10 (Ex: Composite score of 72% = 7.2). TEAS V test needs to be completed by the application deadline date.
- Pre-requisite GPA (refer to program planner).
- The combined total TEAS V composite score and GPA will be utilized to rank applicants for order of acceptance.
- In the event of a tied combined total TEAS V composite score and GPA, the applicant with the highest TEAS V science sub-score will advance in rank order for acceptance. If a further tie exists, the applicant with the highest TEAS math sub-score will advance in rank order for acceptance.
- Applications of students not accepted into the program each round will remain on file through that admission cycle only. If a student chooses to reapply for the next admission cycle, the student must resubmit the entire application.
Part 2: Nursing Programs Application Process
Before applicants are eligible to apply for admission to the nursing program, they must complete all pre-technical courses and requirements as stated on the program planner. All applicants who have completed the minimum admission requirements and application procedures outlined in this document by the program application deadlines will be considered for admission to the program.
- General admission to Lake Superior College (LSC).
- Declared major in AAS Nursing, AAS Nursing Advanced Standing LPN Track or Practical Nursing Program.
- Completed Online Nursing Program application form (hereafter will be referred to application). Please note that the online nursing program application is in addition to the general admission application to LSC. After completing the online application you will receive confirmation in your LSC email (save this email). No paper copies of online applications will be accepted. Save your email confirmation
- A minimum grade point average (GPA) on identified pre-requisite courses (refer to program planner).
- All applicants are required to complete the most current Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI), standardized Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) prior to application deadlines and release scores to LSC.
- Applicants are allowed two (2) attempts per year at the TEAS V exam.
- The best score achieved will be used for scoring.
- Applicants must achieve a minimum TEAS V score of 58.6% to be considered for nursing program entry.
- If you have taken your TEAS V test at another institution, please have the transcript sent electronically to LSC through ATI. LSC will not accept any paper copies of TEAS V scores.

- Application deadlines are listed below.
- Meeting the minimum admission requirements to be placed into the candidate pool for admission consideration does not guarantee admission to any nursing program.
Part 3: Timelines for Nursing Program Application and Notification of Admission Status
Fall Program Start
- Applications will be accepted January 20 through February 15. Application deadline is February 15 at 4:00pm (or the Friday before should this date fall on a weekend or holiday).
- Notification to applicants by LSC:
- March 15: Applicant will be notified of acceptance, denial or alternate list status via mail. Admission is conditional pending all program requirements are met as stated in IV below.
- April 15 (or the Friday before should this date fall on a weekend or holiday): Applicant must notify LSC of acceptance as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to notify LSC of acceptance by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
- May 1: Applicant must register for classes as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to register by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
- The following information must be turned in to the nursing department by the date stated in the acceptance letter.
- Signed acknowledgment which was included in your acceptance letter
- $50.00 non-refundable deposit which will be applied toward your first semester tuition
- All information listed as stated in Post Acceptance Additional Requirements below.
- Students must submit the required documents in one complete file. Failure to complete all steps required for a complete file will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
Spring Program Start
- Applications will be accepted September 1 through September 22. Application deadline is September 22nd at 4:00pm (or the Friday before should this date fall on a weekend or holiday).
- Notification to applicants by LSC:
- October 15: Applicant will be notified of acceptance, denial or alternate list status via mail. Admission is conditional pending all program requirements are met as stated in IV below. Letter will be mailed on October 15th.
- November 15 (or the Friday before should this date fall on a weekend or holiday): Applicant must notify LSC of acceptance as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to notify LSC of acceptance by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
- December 1: Applicant must register for classes as directed in acceptance letter. Failure to register by this date will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
- The following information must be turned in to the nursing department by the date stated in the acceptance letter.
- Signed acknowledgment which was included in your acceptance letter
- $50.00 non-refundable deposit which will be applied toward your first semester tuition
- All information listed as stated in Post Acceptance Additional Requirements below.
- Students must submit the required documents in one complete file. Failure to complete all steps required for a complete file will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program.
Part 4: Post Acceptance Additional Requirements
After notice of acceptance into the nursing program, the following information is required to be submitted to the nursing department by deadline stated in acceptance letter. Information requested must be received in accordance with said deadlines and remain current throughout the program.
Requirements include, but may not be limited to:
- Signed acknowledgement of accepting seat in program
- $50.00 non-refundable deposit receipt
- Copy of Current CPR/First Aid. This requirement is filled only by either the American Heart Association: BLS Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid ALTH1430
- Completion of current Minnesota Human Services Background Check Students can complete background check at the following site: https://bgs.dhs.state.mn.us/a/Login.asp
Disclaimer
Prior to the start of the program and each academic year all students must have a clear criminal background check with no unresolved disqualifying convictions. If the applicant refuses, or is disqualified as a result of the background study, the applicant will result in student forfeiture of seat in nursing program. - Completed health exam and immunization record, including current immunizations and tuberculosis testing, and/or requirements as defined by the clinical partners
- Proof/copy of CNA registry, CMA registry, Military Medic or other as approved by the Director of Nursing Programs
- Advanced standing LPN Track applicants, Licensed Practical Nurses must provide proof of an unencumbered LPN license from the state of MN. The LPN license remain unencumbered throughout the program
