Nursing program
The Associate in Science degree nursing curriculum is built to prepare pupils for the nursing profession. Graduates of the training program are qualified to sit for the NCLEX-RN nursing exam (National Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse) to become a fully registered nurse (RN). The training program is licensed by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN).
New pupils are admitted every semester and are given both theoretical instruction and also an opportunity for clinical application of nursing competencies as they prepare for entry-level practice as registered nurses (RNs). After graduates have passed the nursing licensure examination, they are prepared to fill beginning level placements as Registered Nurses in hospitals, doctor’s offices or other health related establishments and participate in the planning, implementation and also evaluation of nursing care for clients throughout the life cycle. Graduates are qualified for admission to the 4th year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs at UH Mānoa and also UH Hilo.
The KCC ADN Training program is endorsed by the Hawai‘i State Board of Nursing and also accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Upon successful completion of the Associate in nursing degree prerequisites, the pupil should be able to:
- Evaluate nursing care based on the legal and also ethical structure of the state in which they practice as well as the American Nurses Association Standard of Practice and Code of Ethics.
- Describe and also evaluate episodes of clinical practice and self-care; identify aspects of strength and those requiring development.
About the school
Kapiʻolani Community College, USA, initially Kapiʻolani Technical School, is a public, co-educational commuter college in Honolulu, USA. Hawaiʻi located on the slopes of Diamond Head in Waikīkī. It is among the ten divisions of the University of Hawaiʻi system anchored by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
Originally situated at Pensacola Street and also Kapiʻolani Boulevard (which the school got its name from), adjacent to President William McKinley High School in the Makiki community, Kapiʻolani Community College was founded in 1946 as Kapiʻolani Technical College. The institution was administered by the Region of Hawaiʻi as one of its chief vocational schools, specializing in food service.
In the year 1965, their curriculum was modified and also became an open-door public college administered by the University of Hawaiʻi. As part of the realignment of programs, the institution adopted its present name.

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
- Completion of prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or higher;
- A minimum cumulative grade point ratio (CPR) of 2.5 or higher for the prerequisite general education courses and general support courses in the nursing curriculum, all courses being completed with a grade of “C” or higher;
- An Assessment Technology Institute-Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI-TEAS) Exam taken with an adjusted individual total score of 78% or higher with 3-year expiration. Effective June 1, 2013, an adjusted individual total score of 65% or higher will be considered for admission as part of a pilot study to be conducted by the KCC Nursing
Department;
- A minimum cumulative grade point ratio (GPR) of 2.0 for all college courses taken at Kapi’olani Community College.
- Courses completed via credit by exam will be accepted by the Nursing Department and assigned a grade of “C” for the application ranking process. Courses completed on a credit/no-credit basis will NOT be accepted by the Nursing Department as a letter grade of “C” or higher must be verified for all prerequisite and co-requisite courses.
- Grades for courses taken for credit must be equivalent to a “C” or higher.
