Nursing program

The nursing program at KVCC readies the student for a technical career in nursing. Employment opportunities include long-term acute care, acute care hospitals, and extended care facilities, offices, clinics,  home health and ambulatory care.

Graduates may transfer credits toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at numerous colleges and universities.

The Kalamazoo Valley Community College nursing program is endorsed by the Michigan State Board of Nursing. It comprises of two semesters of prerequisite coursework and two semesters of nursing coursework for the full-time RN completion student. Scholarships, Financial aid,  tutoring, and counseling services are available to help students.

Upon completion of all nursing coursework successfully, the graduate will receive an Associate in Applied Science degree and will be qualified to write the National Council Licensure Exam for the Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN).

About the school

Kalamazoo Valley Community College was founded in 1966 by the vast approval of voters in nine local school districts. It is a broad, fully accredited, public, two-year College with an enrollment of about 10,000 students.

Kalamazoo Valley offers associate degrees in 25 areas of study and certificate programs in more than 20 others. In addition to associate degree and certificate programs in health care, business, human and public service, industry and technical occupations, the college also delivers a quality experience for students ready to transfer to four-year institutions following graduation.

Presently, Kalamazoo Valley Community College has four campuses: Arcadia Commons, Texas Township,  Groves Campus plus the Bronson Healthy Living Campus.

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

COMPETITIVE ADMISSION – SELECTION CRITERIA TO THE NURSING PROGRAM

1. Students must have successfully completed the pre-requisite courses with a minimum grade of 2.0.
2. Students must have a minimal overall GPA (grade point average) of a 2.0.
3. In the event that a student is transferring coursework from another institution, the overall GPA from those institutions will be included in the overall GPA calculation.
4. Students will be selected by overall GPA. The student with the highest GPA will be offered the first seat in the program, the second highest will be offered the second seat etc. until all seats are filled.

APPLICANTS WHO ARE NOT SELECTED WILL NEED TO REAPPLY

STEPS IN THE RN COMPLETION PROGRAM ACCEPTANCE PROCESS

1. Submit an application to Kalamazoo Valley Community College listing Nursing (NRP2) as the major code.

2. Schedule a Compass assessment appointment, by calling (269) 488-4100. You will be required to take the Compass assessment in English, Reading, and Math. If you need to further develop your competencies in these areas, you will be required to take recommended coursework.

3. Official high school transcripts and/or college transcripts must be sent to the KVCC Record’s Office if you are planning to use either of these documents to meet program pre-requisites requirements. It will be your responsibility to verify that all college credits are posted on your KVCC transcript.

4. Schedule an appointment with an academic counselor by calling (269) 488-4123 to develop a program plan. This is a critical step to complete early in your admission process.

5. Complete the pre-requisite courses listed. These courses can be completed at KVCC or at another college. KVCC counselors must determine equivalency for non-KVCC courses.

6. You may apply for acceptance into the nursing program if you have completed or are currently enrolled in your last pre-requisite(s). Pre-requisites for fall admission must be completed by the end of the winter semester of the current year. Pre-requisites for winter admission must be completed by the first 8 weeks of the fall semester of the current year.

7. Applications for the fall(September) Nursing Program will be accepted during the first two weeks of APRIL and are available in February through the second week in April. Applications for the winter (January) Nursing Program will be accepted during the last two weeks of SEPTEMBER and are available in August and September. Applications may be obtained from the Texas Township Campus Nursing Office (posted outside of room 7426) or online at kvcc.edu/academics/nursing/applicationRNcompletion.php. The application period may be extended or reopened if needed to fill the class.

8. A criminal background check including fingerprinting will be required. The process to complete the background check will be detailed only after being identified as “admitted.” The cost of the background check will be the responsibility of the student. If a student does not pass a criminal background check or is subsequently arrested for or convicted of criminal offenses covered by Michigan Public Health Code, Section 20173, the applicant will not be placed into a clinical component or rotation of any course which requires such clinical component or rotation. Completion of all clinical components and rotations are a graduation requirement. A degree will not be granted to those who do not successfully complete all clinical components or rotations.

9. If admitted or identified as an alternate, drug screening will be required. The process to complete the drug screening will be identified in the acceptance letter. The cost of the drug screening will be the applicant’s responsibility. The results of the drug screening will be used, in part, to determine eligibility to participate in clinical rotations. As stated in H, completion of all clinical components and rotations are a graduation requirement. Drug screening will be required just prior to initial clinical placement and annually thereafter.

10. A current completed and acceptable immunization form must be on file in the Nursing Office. The completed form and supporting documentation are to be submitted with the nursing application.

11. A current completed, and acceptable physical/health form must be on file in the Nursing Office once you have been accepted to the nursing program. The physical/health form will be considered current for one year after the date of examination. Any information on the physical examination form that is incomplete or unclear may require the student and/or physician to provide further information.

12. Once admitted, failure to register for courses by the designated deadline will result in forfeiture of placement and will be considered a withdrawal for the purpose of future program placement.

13. If you are not selected into the program based on the number of qualified applicants and the number of available seats, you must reapply for admission as per 6 and 7 above.

CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS RN COMPLETION

We recommend if your science and/or math knowledge is outdated (grades ≥ 5 years old) you enroll in the KVCC science/math course prerequisite, for either grade or audit.

Transcripts
Official college transcripts and/or high school transcripts must be sent to the KVCC Record’s Office if you are planning to use either of these documents to meet program pre-requisites requirements. You will meet our high school or college pre-requisite course work requirement(s) if you have completed the course with a grade of C (2.0) or better. If you have not, you can still meet our pre-requisites by successfully completing the appropriate KVCC courses with a grade of 2.0 or higher.

**NURS 190 is to be completed the semester before beginning the RN completion program. You can obtain additional information from the Nursing Office, Room 7426.

Additional Prerequisites
In addition, the following are necessary before starting the first semester of the nursing program.

1. Valid Michigan Practical Nursing License.

2. Current CPR – validation in Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider or Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer. You are required to submit documentation of current CPR certification after you have been accepted to the nursing program.

3. Hepatitis B immunity must be demonstrated by either a lab report documenting an immune titer value or documentation of the completed series of immunizations.
