Nursing program
Hibbing Community College awards an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing. Advance standing LPNs and Traditional students are accepted. Clinical practices are offered in area community hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and other community-based health care agencies.
Students who successfully complete the general education and nursing graduation requirements of this program are qualified to apply for licensure and take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Graduates are trained for entry-level positions in clinics, hospitals, home health agencies and nursing homes. Employment projections for registered nurses are excellent.
Hibbing Community College’s nursing program is endorsed by the Minnesota State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc.
About the school
Hibbing Community College is a community college situated in Hibbing, Minnesota, United States. The college was established in 1916, initially housed in the historic Hibbing High School; it moved to its campus in 1969.
Hibbing Technical College also was intended to serve the Hibbing area. Hibbing Community College is part of the Northeast Minnesota Higher Education District and also a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

Types of Nursing Student Applicants
Students fall into one of these two categories. There are slight differences in requirements that are noted between the traditional and advance standing student. If you have a question as to which group you belong, please contact Nursing Admissions.
- Traditional Student
This student comes to the program in the fall semester. The student takes courses over two years (four semesters and one summer session) to complete the program.
- Advance Standing – LPN Student
This student enters the program in the summer session between years one and two. The student has completed an LPN program and is licensed as an LPN in Minnesota. The student completes the summer session bridge course and joins the second year of the traditional pathway. They receive advance standing based on their previous nursing education.
THE NURSING ADMISSION PROCESS
The following steps are meant to guide you through the process of submitting your application for the nursing program as well as give you details on how criteria is gathered and used in making admission decisions. Only students with a completed Nursing Program Application are considered for admission.
Step One: Acceptance to Hibbing Community College.
1) Complete a Hibbing Community College Application form and fee. Apply online at www.hibbing.edu, through mail to the HCC Admissions Office at 1515 E. 25th Street in Hibbing with the check or money order made payable to Hibbing Community College, or in person at the college.
2) Send official college transcripts from ALL previous colleges attended. Have these sent to the HCC Admissions Office. (Note: Minnesota State – formerly MnSCU college transcripts can be downloaded by nursing admissions and do not need to be sent to the college)
Step Two: Acceptance to the Nursing Program.
(Step One above must be completed first)
1) Complete and submit a Nursing Program Application

Criteria that is used to determine acceptance into the nursing program are as follows:
Requirements for admission to the Nursing Program
There are two pathways to gain acceptance into the Nursing Program once you have received a general letter of acceptance to Hibbing Community College:
- Transfer of Required general education courses (as indicated on the most recent HCC Program in Nursing Planning Form)
- A minimum of 13 semester credits from the required general education courses must be completed prior to the application deadline. However – All required general education course credits completed prior to the application deadline will be used in calculating GPAs.
AND
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher must be met when calculating grades earned in all required general education courses taken.
AND
- An overall college GPA of 2.0 must be attained.
OR
- Scores from the ACT or SAT.
Minimum required scores are an ACT composite score of 23 or higher; or SAT combined score of 1070 (CR+M) or higher. These scores must be within two (2) years of the student’s application to the Program.
