The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) training program prepares pupils for entry-level practice as registered nurses (RNs) and provides upward movement for licensed practical nurses. Students acquire clinical practice in local hospitals, public mental health institutions, and community health agencies. Pupils must finish a Practical Nursing program before starting the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program.
Students receive knowledge and competencies in nursing basis, lifespan growth and development, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medical-surgical nursing. Students utilize classroom and also laboratory experience with patients in clinical functions. Pupils receive experience in the state-of-the-art Van Gerpen Patient Simulator Laboratory using lifelike, full-body manikins and also high-fidelity simulators to duplicate a range of clinical situations in a regulated environment.
Students must finish the Practical Nursing (PN) training program before starting the Associate Degree Nursing program.
Graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing program are qualified to take the national and state/regional examinations for licensure, which is needed to practice as a Registered Nurse in any state. Please keep in mind, a social security number is needed to be able to take exams and also apply for licensure.
The program is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing and Commission on Institutes of the North Central Association.

Hawkeye Community College (HCC) is a community college, with its major campus situated at 1501 E. Orange Rd., just outside Waterloo, Iowa, United States Of America. Hawkeye has numerous outlying centers in Cedar Falls, Independence, Grundy County, Waterloo, and Waverly.
The Hawkeye Institute of Technology started on July 1, 1966, replacing the former Waterloo Area Vocational School. In the year 1992, Hawkeye became “comprehensive,” adding courses in the liberal arts and sciences. In July 1993, the college’s name turned from Hawkeye Institute of Technology to Hawkeye Community College. The college’s president is Dr.Linda Allen. Hawkeye Community College is approved by The Higher Learning Commission and the Iowa Department of Education.

Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
- Students must meet the minimum assessment score of the ACT, ACCUPLACER, or COMPASS assessment or have completed the required success course in each math, English, and reading.
- All students must successfully complete the program prerequisite courses, including two semesters of high school chemistry or CHM122 Introduction to General Chemistry with a grade of C or higher.
- All Hawkeye Community College nursing applicants must successfully pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Exam with a composite score of 64% or higher.
- Applicants who meet the program admission requirements for entrance into the nursing program will be placed on the Eligible for Acceptance list. Placement on the list is determined by the GPA attained from the pre-requisite courses, with the highest GPA being at the top. If more than one applicant shares the same GPA, the second criteria used will be a file completion date, which is the date the applicant registered for their last prerequisite course or provided documentation of all required courses being met from another accredited institution.
