Nursing Program
The AS in Nursing degree program trains graduates to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The associate degree nurse is organized to use the nursing procedure to offer nursing care that enhances the achievement of best health outcomes. Students learn the practices and principles of nursing through independent and Web-enhanced study, demonstrations, lectures, skills practice, and simulation. They take part in clinical practical off campus in a range of healthcare environments under the direction of nursing instructors. Employment opportunities abound in long-term care, acute care, and a diversity of community-based healthcare agencies.
The Associate Degree in Nursing and Practical Nursing programs has the approval of the Maryland Board of Nursing and the Accreditation of the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
About the school
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) in La Plata, Maryland, is a regional community college, serving the people of Southern Maryland’s St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert counties.
In1958, the predecessor to today’s CSM, the Charles County Junior College, started evening classes at La Plata High School. The college later added an apprenticeship program IHN 1960.
By the year 1968, Charles County Community College started the construction of the Administration and Career Education Building on what is today the main campus of CSM in La Plata, Maryland. The College formally became the College of Southern Maryland on July 1, 2000. Today the college boasts of so many associate degree and certificate courses with high enrollment rate.
Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s County Residents are expected to spend about $10,900 on tuition fees; other Maryland residents are to spend about $18,900. Out-of-state residents are to spend about $24,400.
Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
AS in Nursing Admission Criteria:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 2.0 GPA in high school or college (with at least 12 earned college credits)
- College placement test scores at the ENG 1010 and MTH 1100 levels, and placement out of Reading, or completion of the appropriate College Prep courses to achieve these levels
- ACT (American College Test) composite raw score of 20 or above or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) equivalent score of 950**** or above for Critical Reading and Math. ACT and SAT scores are considered current for five years).

This is a competitive admission program. First consideration will be given to residents of CSM’s service area (Calvert, Charles, St Mary’s counties). All petitioners who have met the admission criteria are ranked and admitted according to their residency status, cumulative GPA, and ACT/SAT. The cumulative GPA will be calculated for all colleges in which transfer work has been applied to the program.
Admission and progression in this program require that a grade of “C” or better be earned in all coursework. The minimum grade of “C” is 75% for nursing courses that have letter grades.
