Nursing program
- The nurse trained at the baccalaureate level is a specialist who has acquired a well-delineated and also a vast knowledge base for practice. The position of a baccalaureate graduate is comprehensive and also developed via substantial study in the areas of liberal education, core competencies, professional values, core knowledge and role development. This knowledge base grooms the beginning baccalaureate graduate to serve as a provider of direct and also indirect care to persons, families, groups, communities as well as populations.
- The baccalaureate graduate is also an associate of the profession as well as a designer, manager and also coordinator of care. Furthermore, the baccalaureate prepared nurse has a background in teaching, research and also management competencies which lay the footing for leadership roles and graduate education.
- The BSN training program is certified by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The BSN training program is also endorsed by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing.
- A-State participates in the statewide articulation training program for licensed practical nurses (LPN) and also licensed psychiatric technician nurses seeking the BSN degree. LPNs and LPTNs may receive sophomore level credit by articulation.
- The School of Nursing offers pupils who have attained a Bachelor’s degree in another field the chance to complete an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing option. The course of study for the BSN degree is completed in thirteen months.

Following are the minimum requirements for BSN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
- Apply for admission to Arkansas State University.
- Applicants must take the HESI A2 admission exam (reading comprehension, math and vocabulary). Payment is non-refundable. You are only allowed to take admission exam once per academic year. Admission exam is a timed exam, with a 3-hour time limit. Admission exams not taken within the application year, are not valid and you must retest.
- Submit the online BSN application by the June 15th deadline.
- Applicants must submit all transfer coursework to the registrar’s office by May 25th. DO NOT submit official transcripts to the School of Nursing.
Students must have at least 30 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above completed by the application deadline (June 15th).
The following courses must be completed with a “C” or higher prior to the application deadline:
- ENG 1003: Composition I 3
- ENG 1013: Composition II 3
- MATH 1023: College Algebra 3
- PSY 2013: Intro to Psychology 3
- Select one of the following:

- HIST 2773: U.S. History II 3
- BIO 2203/2201 Human Anatomy & Physiology I & Lab 4

LPN-BSN APPLICANTS:
- Apply for admission to A-State. Contact the Office of Admissions at (800) 382-3030 or (870) 972-3024 for information or online at http://admissions.astate.edu
- Apply for admission to the LPN-BSN program. Application now available on this website on April 30.
- Submit the following by the June 15 deadline:
- Completed LPN-BSN Application
- Take the HESI A2 admission exam (reading comprehension, math and vocabulary). Payment for admission exam is non-refundable. You are only allowed to take admission exam once per academic year. Admission exam is a timed exam, with a 3-hour time limit. Admission exams not taken within the application year, are not valid and you must retest.
- Official (sealed) transcripts of ALL college work completed. These MUST be attached to the application.
- If you previously attended a nursing program that you did not complete, you must have the program Dean/Director send a letter stating your standing when you left the program. This letter must be submitted electronically to Robin Thompson at [email protected] or by mail to the address below.
- Validation of work experience, if applicable.
Applicants who complete their LPN/LPTN program less than 12 months prior to application to the BSN program are not required to have work experience.

2ND DEGREE ACCELERATED
To apply for the 2nd Degree Accelerated track, candidates should follow the below steps:
- Apply for admission to A-State as “undergraduate post-degree for Summer term. Contact the Office of Admissions at (800) 382-3030 or (870) 972-3024 for information or online at http://admissions.astate.edu
- Apply for admission to the Second Degree Accelerated BSN program. Applications will be available on this website on January 15.
- Submit the following by the March 15 deadline:
- Completed Second Degree Accelerated BSN Application
- Take the HESI A2 Admission exam (reading comprehension, math and vocabulary sections). Testing dates will be posted on the School of Nursing webpage. For additional information, email Brenda Goodwin. Payment for admission exam is non-refundable. You are only allowed to take admission exam once per academic year. Admission exam is a timed exam, with a 3-hour time limit. Admission exams not taken within the application year, are not valid and you must retest.
- Official (sealed) transcripts of ALL college work completed. These MUST be attached to the application.
- If you have previously attended a nursing program that you did not complete, you must have the program Dean/Director send a letter stating your standing when you left the program. This letter must be in the nursing office by the application deadline.
- Documentation of English Proficiency, if applicable.
- Applicants will be contacted regarding interview scheduling after the application deadline.
All prerequisite course work, including Bachelor degree earned, must be completed by the end of the Spring semester for Summer admission to the program.
Beginning Spring 2015, student selection will be based on prerequisite GPA, HESI A2 admission exam (reading comprehension, math and vocabulary) and interview with special consideration for those with Spanish proficiency and/or a degree in a clinical health care field.
