Nursing program

  • The BSN training program at George Mason University; the traditional Pathway is a 2-year curriculum following the completion of general education and also prerequisite requirements. The Traditional track in nursing must be completed on a regular basis.
  • The BSN Training program is certified by the Virginia State Board of Nursing along with the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The undergraduate training program prepares students to deliver superior care and also lead in an increasingly complex as well as challenging health industry. Graduates are in demand at long-term care facilities, hospitals, and also care agencies.

  • George Mason University is the biggest public research institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The University was established as an outlet of the University of Virginia in 1949 and also became an independent institution in 1972.

Following are the minimum requirements for BSN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

The Traditional BSN program is a competitive program and program enrollment is limited due to the number of clinical spaces available. Admission into the program is once a year (fall term only) and all general education (except ENGH 302) prerequisites, elective prerequisites, and nursing prerequisite courses must be complete by the end of Mason’s spring term (not summer term) before the program begins (thus courses need to be complete by May 20).

  • receive admission to Mason
  • complete all general education (except ENGH 302) and nursing prerequisites by end the of Mason’s spring term (May 20)
  • complete two of the three science nursing prerequisite courses by the date of application
  • achieve a satisfactory GPA in the designated nursing prerequisite coursework
  • Successful candidate typically achieves minimum nursing prerequisite GPA of 3.0
  • achieve no less than grade of C (not C-) in each nursing prerequisite course
  • achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 in general education/elective prerequisite coursework, with no less than grade of C or better (not C-) in each general education/elective course
  • submit the BSN Departmental Application, Slideroom submissions, and supporting documents by the stated deadline.

In order to be eligible for admission to the Traditional Pathway, all applicants must complete the necessary prerequisite coursework prior to enrolling in the program.

General Education Prerequisites

  • English Composition (3 cr)
  • Communication (3 cr)
  • Literature (3 cr)
  • Arts (3 cr)
  • Social Science (3 cr)
  • General Psychology is required for Mason students
  • Western Civilization (3 cr)
  • Global Understanding (3 cr)
  • Information Technology (3 cr)
  • Quantitative Reasoning (3 cr)
  • Electives (7 cr)
  • Sociology or Anthropology course is recommended

Nursing Prerequisites

  • Bioethics (3 cr)
  • Anatomy and Physiology (8 cr)*
  • Microbiology (4 cr)*
  • Human Lifespan Development (3 cr)
  • Statistics (3 cr)
  • Nutrition (3 cr)

*For Traditional applicants, Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology coursework cannot be more than five years old by the time of BSN enrollment. For fall 2017 admission, courses must have been completed during or after fall 2012. Courses completed during the spring or summer 2012 semester will not meet this requirement.
