Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Track Program

Applications for admission to the baccalaureate nursing program should be submitted by December 20 for fall and by May 31 for spring. Students desiring to enter the four-year track should apply for admission toward the end of the third semester of their prerequisites.

The admission requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree are set by the nursing faculty. The program’s admission committee reviews all applications and selects the most qualified students. Applicants must be admitted as regular students to the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Admission Criteria for Students Applying for Admittance in Spring 2018 and Prior Semesters

• Admissions are competitive and based upon the applicant’s cumulative academic record (GPA) and space availability. The best qualified students are admitted. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Applicants must be admitted to the University of South Carolina Upstate.
• All prerequisite courses (lower-division, general education studies) must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
• Only one nursing course or required science course may be repeated to earn a grade of “C” or better.
• Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on at least three required science courses at the time of application.
• All required science courses must have been successfully completed within the last 5 years.
• All required science courses must be successfully completed within two attempts. Courses designated by a “W,” “WF” or “AUD” are considered an attempt at the course.
• Applicants must have completed all prerequisite requirements prior to acceptance. All prerequisites must be completed by the end of the previous major semester (fall or spring). If applying for a fall term, one course is allowed to be taken over the previous summer, but it must be taken at USC Upstate or another USC campus.
• Applicants must successfully complete a pre-admission exam. The details for this exam will be updated and posted in the most current application instructions when available.
• Applicants are NOT required to complete a CNA program.
• Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 may be admitted on probation if space is available.

Admission Criteria beginning for Students Applying for Admittance in Fall 2018 and Beyond

• Only one nursing course or required science course with a grade below a “C” is allowed to progress. A student would be ineligible for our program if two grades below a “C” are earned in nursing and/or required science courses, regardless of the number of attempts made at the courses.
• Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on at least three required science courses at the time of application. Those courses may include chemistry and microbiology, but MUST include anatomy and physiology I and II and pathophysiology.
• All required science courses must have been successfully completed within the last 5 years.
