Nursing program

  • The nursing training program at Northern Michigan University integrates the study of humanities and also physical and behavioral sciences with professional nursing courses and also clinical experience. Pupils are expected to demonstrate competency in critical thinking, communication and also therapeutic nursing interventions when providing care for patients, families and also communities. Graduates of the training program are competent to take the National Council for Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN) as well as to apply for entrance to graduate programs in nursing.
  • NMU’s School of Nursing readies pupils to excel in various hospital and also community settings. You will obtain expert knowledge, technical competence and also interpersonal skills.
  • Students majoring in nursing must maintain at least 2.25 NMU cumulative grade point average and also must complete all nursing courses with at least grade of “C”, or “S” when the course is graded “S/U”.
  • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education certifies the Baccalaureate degree training program in nursing at Northern Michigan University

Following are the minimum requirements for BSN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:

  1. Complete an application for admission (unless a student has previously applied; if so, notify the Admissions Office).
  2. Submit $35 application fee.
  3. Request official high school transcript or GED score report, and/or any college/university/trade school transcripts to be sent to the Admissions Office.
  4. Graduate from high school with an academic grade point average of 2.25 or better;
  5. Attain a minimum ACT composite score of 19 or a minimum SAT total score of 980 (Redesigned SAT, March 2016 and later) or 900 (old SAT, math and critical reading sections).
  6. Successfully complete 12-16 credits (1 credit = equivalent of full year) of core academic courses. These may include courses in English/literature, mathematics, science, social studies and world language.  While we look for evidence of preparation for success in college level work, an applicant will not be penalized for slight deviations from this list or number of courses.

Michigan students should follow the Michigan Merit Curriculum, and all students are strongly encouraged to take core courses as follows:

  • Four years of English
  • Four years of college preparatory mathematics
  • Four years of social studies
  • Four years of science
  • Two years of world language
