Nursing Program
Waubonsee’s Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Nursing respected within the local community college district, the neighbouring region and across the country as trainers of quality registered nurses. The support of the college’s Board of Trustees, administration and academic areas enhance the success of the program and that of the students.
The program is endorsed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). After completion of all college and program requirements, successful graduates are fit to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX).
About the school
Waubonsee Community College is a public community college established in 1966 in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. It has four campuses in Aurora, Sugar Grove, and Plano.
Waubonsee Community College serves twelve school districts in Sugar Grove, Batavia, Big Rock, Bristol, Aurora, Elburn, Geneva, Hinckley, Kaneville, Maple Park, North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich, Somonauk, Leland, Oswego, and Yorkville.
Waubonsee Community College was in July 1966. The college’s name was decided as the result of a March 1967 district-wide challenge. Some 600 entries were given, and the winning name was Waubonsee, which means “early day” or “early dawn.”
Cost
Residents of Illinois pay an annual total price of $8,562 to attend Waubonsee Community College on a full-time basis. This fee comprises of $6,810 for tuition, $1,560 for books and supplies and $192 for other fees.
Out of state residents are charged a total cost of $9,147 which is 6.8% higher than Illinois residents. The tuition charge is $7,395 while books and supplies are $1,560 and other fees come in at $192.
Following are the minimum requirements for ADN-RN Nursing Program. Minimum admission standards include:
Students seeking admission to the nursing program are required to:
- Submit a completed New Student Information Form to Admissions.
- Meet with Counseling, Advising and Transfer Center to establish a schedule for taking prerequisite courses.
- Obtain specific admission information by contacting the Health Care Programs Office, (630) 870-3901.
- Take the required TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) assessment test.
(NOTE: For first consideration, test scores should be recorded by the application deadline. However, scores received by January 1 MAY be considered for Spring and scores received by August 1 MAY be considered for Fall if space is still available in the program.)
- Contact the Center for Learning Assessment at (630) 466-7900, ext. 5700 for Nursing Program Assessment testing details such as fees, availability, and scheduling procedures.
- Acceptance into the program is based on assessment results, with documentation of Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English and Language Usage of 55%, as well as a composite of 55% for the TEAS. A student has two opportunities to successfully meet assessment requirements within a two year period. If a student fails to successfully meet assessment requirements on their first attempt, eight weeks must elapse between testing sessions for the TEAS assessments. If a student fails to successfully meet assessment requirements on their second attempt, they may retest two calendar years from their first attempt (when their first attempt scores expire). Due to the eight week retest policy for each assessment, students should plan accordingly for the initial test and possible re-test. Guidance is provided by the Learning Enhancement Center and the Center for Learning Assessment for students who do not meet these entry requirements. Test scores are only valid for 24 months.
- Complete and submit the Nursing Application Form (pdf) required for entry into the program, along with a program application fee of $10 (check or money order made out to Waubonsee Community College). Application to the program must be made prior to the deadline for the semester the student desires to enter:
- March 15 for fall enrollment (August/October)

Enrollment is limited in the nursing (NUR) courses in order to provide the best possible educational experience for students. (Note: Selection for admission into the program for either August/October or January/March will be determined by the Admissions Committee. Applicants should anticipate acceptance for either start date for fall or spring semesters.)
- Attain a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher for prerequisite courses.
- Complete science courses within five years of application filing deadline. Science courses taken more than five years before the application deadline must be retaken. There are no exceptions.
- Understand that all of the following documentation must be submitted in order to be considered for acceptance into the program:
- New Student Information Form;
- Nursing Program Application (including $10 application fee);
- ORIGINAL residency documents (see #11)
- successful completion of prerequisite courses or test results from any proficiency examinations (CLEP);
- nursing assessment entrance testing;
- transcripts from other colleges/universities.
- Once accepted into the program, the student must:
- attend the mandatory new student orientation to the nursing program;
- submit documentation of a physical and dental examination, current immunizations, and a 2-step tuberculosis (TB) test – none of which should be more than one year old at the time of entry;
- follow the program sequence for all NUR courses;
- attain a 2.0 (C) or better GPA in each of the nursing courses.
- Official written notification of acceptance into the program will be received via certified mail. Students not accepted must reapply.
- In compliance with the Illinois Community College Act, in-district applicants will be given preference over out-of-district applicants. Proof of residencyis required at the time of application submission . Contact Registration and Records for information regarding residency. Having paid in-district tuition rates in the past does not necessarily qualify an individual as an in-district resident.
- Are you a veteran or military service member that has current eligibility for either federal VA Education benefits for Illinois military grants? (Federal VA Education programs include: Chapter 30, 31, 33, 1606 and REAP. State grants are the Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG) or Illinois National Guard (ING). If “yes,” please attach a copy of your benefits Certificate of Eligibility to your application. Our office will confirm your benefit eligibility by contacting the Waubonsee Financial Aid Offices’ VA School Certifying Official.
